✷ WHAT IS THEIR DEAL??? ✷

Betony and Osprey are characters from THE HEIR OF ELDIS, an in-progress series. It takes multiple books to figure out what, exactly, is going on between them. Here's a very basic (slightly spoilery) summary, though:

In a far-future spacefaring setting, men of the noble class are served by knights: personal bodyguards, bedroom companions, and sacrificial duelists for their lords' honor. Betony is a noble lord. Osprey is the knight of Betony's cousin, Lilian. Betony's knight, Mylos, was Osprey's former boyfriend at knight school. (A helpful diagram)
Osprey is forced to duel Mylos (to the death). It goes terribly. Everyone is upset.
Due to later plot reasons(🦐), Osprey is separated from Lilian (who is missing/ assumed dead). Betony uses the opportunity to take Osprey as his replacement knight(somewhat forcibly and with dubious legality).
This starts as a fun little game for Betony to revenge-torture Osprey as a distraction from his grief. Osprey, haunted by his own misdeeds and also somewhat of a masochist, gets off on the punishment.
This ends up being weirdly healing for both of them ???? Which is really embarassing. They continue to do cartoon BDSM shit to each other while not quite wanting to deal with their feelings.
Will they confront their feelings? How will it all play out? Who knows 😉
